From IMDb. Although the certificate was raised to 15 the dialogue cuts for the cinema 'A' by mistake weren't actually reinstated.

UK: Passed A after BBFC cuts for:

  • 1975 cinema release

From IMDb. The BBFC cut the 1975 cinema release for an A certificate. The initial cuts list was:

  • Reel 1: In the fight between the black and green knights remove the blood gush from the knight being stabbed through the visor
  • Reel 2: Remove repeated uses of Jesus Christ .
  • Reel 2: Remove the sight of blood gushing from historian AJP Taylor' s neck after having his throat cut
  • Reel 3: Dialogue cuts to Zoot's use of the phrase the oral sex.
  • Reel 3: Dialogue cuts to remove the sister saying 'shit'
  • Reel 4: A close up of blood on bride's mouth

The Distributors negotiated about the cuts and the final cuts were:

  • Reel 1: In the fight between the black and green knights remove the blood gush from the knight being stabbed through the visor
  • Reel 2: Remove repeated uses of Jesus Christ . (Implemented via overdubbing)
  • Reel 2: Remove the sight of blood gushing from historian AJP Taylor' s neck after having his throat cut

Script Advice

The producers submitted an initial script to the BBFC for advice and were informed that the script would likely result in an X (18) rating. The producers duly toned down the script.

Negotiations with the BBFC

There is a famous letter published on the internet that outlines the first position in a sequence of behind the scenes negotiations between the BBFC and the producers. At an advice screening, a BBFC examiner suggested that the submitted film would be AA but could be cut for an A as follows:
  • Lose as may shits as possible
  • Take Jesus Christ out, if possible
  • Lose I fart in your general direction
  • Lose the oral sex
  • Lose oh, fuck off
  • Lose We make castanets out of your testicles

A letter from Stephen Murphy also reveals that the BBFC were not impressed with the argument that because Monty Python was shown on TV then this somehow correlated to an 'A' certificate being appropriate.

Murphy also said that bloody humour was not affective n one or two places and that the BBFC was less than enchanted about the funny Frenchman.

He also ticked off the film makers for the use of 'Jesus Christ'. He noted:

The repetition of 'Jesus Christ in the film seems to us unnecessary. There is good evidence that this does distress people who would otherwise enjoy the film.

At this stage the producers agreed to:

Lose the shits, take the odd Jesus Christ out and lose Oh fuck off, but to retain 'fart in your general direction', castanets of your testicles and 'oral sex' and ask him for an A rating on that basis.

Unfortunately nothing further was reported on the negotiations which clearly resulted in a compromise quite different to that outlined in the early exchange .

The Missing 24s

Unrelated to the BBFC negotiations the producers also decided to delete a scene which has become known as the Missing 24s:

I n the scene where the heroic knights come across a castle full of nubile women: When the girl states that her sister has lit the beacon that is grail shaped, my Paramount print goes on to say that they should all be spanked as punishment. The Paramount print has several shots along the following lines before the line "You should spank us all" The girl stating that "that was a good chance for a pussy gag" The knight saying that "he's glad this will/won't be cut" A shot of the crowd shouting "Get on with it" and God shouting "Get on With it".

In the third series, the BBC started making some fairly ridiculous censorship decisions . A battle over one particular sketch saw all six Pythons in a heated argument with the head of comedy. We fought them for the right to say 'masturbation' .

Did they say it? It was cut out. We recorded it. It was the man in the Summarise Proust Competition whose hobbies were strangling animals, golf and masturbating. They just cut the word, so you had: My hobbies are strangling animals, golf... short pause, huge laugh... So what was so funny about golf?

Summary Review: A Very Naughty Boy
Hugely controversial at the time, the subject matter of The Life of Brian was considered strictly taboo in 1979, and even today it can still rattle a few cages, but ultimately the Python team all shared the same conviction that they were not poking fun at religion (or Jesus) per se, but at the people who blindly follow and misunderstand. In this way, The Life Of Brian became not just a comedy classic, but a ground-breaking movie that pushed the barriers of what was previously considered off-limits .

Each member of the Python team contributes immensely to the film, with Eric Idle supplying a classic Python tune as Brian is being crucified ( Always Look On The Bright Side of Life ), Terry Gilliam with some great visual gags, Terry Jones as the director of the film, Cleese and Palin turning in multiple brilliant performances (like Cleese's Reg, the leader of the PFJ, and the classic What have the Roman's ever done for us? sketch), not to mention Chapman as the unsuspecting hero.

UK: Based on article from en.wikipedia.org :
Banned by 11 local authorities out of 101 who viewed it. Another 28 decided to raise the rating to 18.

The film contains themes of religious satire which were controversial at the time of its release, drawing accusations of blasphemy and protests from some religious groups. Thirty-nine local authorities in the UK either imposed an outright ban, or imposed an X certificate (effectively preventing the film from being shown as the distributors said the film could not be shown unless it was unedited and carried the original AA certificate).

One of the councils to ban the film, Bournemouth, made the news in 2015 with the first public screening in 35 years.

Glasgow was one of 39 local authorities in the UK that refused to accept the BBFC rating on blasphemy grounds. The unofficial 30-year ban was only lifted back in 2009, when the council's licensing and regulatory committee approved a request from the GFT to show the biblical satire under a 15 certificate.

Kirklees Council (Huddersfield) added the film to its stop list in 1979 but the film was unbanned in 1980. See Why Kirklees Council banned Monty Python classic The Life Of Brianfrom examinerlive.co.uk

International: The film was also banned in Ireland, Singapore and Norway.

The marketeers made use of the latter with the promotional line: The film so funny that it was banned in Norway.

Thanks to Richard:

I first saw in the UK on a PG-rated VHS. It always seemed a little dark in tone, and quite violent and somewhat graphic for its BBFC PG rating but nothing too nasty, it was more macabre and creepy than gory. When I saw reviews for it in a lot of US film guides, they all displayed an R rating. It seemed odd for them to release what was clearly a fairly dark sci-fi horror flick with a more lenient rating in the UK.

I finally saw the R-rated version on YouTube - and the only difference between the US and UK releases were two scenes of nudity missing in the UK version:

  • One at a strip club showing a girl topless,
  • a later scene on the Moon when Walter Koenig is in the tent with the awakened female astronaut on the moon when they get it on.

It seems like the UK distributors were trying to squeeze more money by cutting out the nude stuff and releasing the rest with a PG rating. There's no mention of cuts on the BBFC website.

Summary Review : Brutally observed spoof horror

Farmer Vincent kidnaps unsuspecting travellers and is burying them in his garden. Unfortunately for his victims, they are not dead. He feeds his victims to prepare them for his famously delicious roadside sausage stand.

What we have is a delicious little parody of the horror genre, outrageous in places, ironic in others.

Rory Calhoun plays the owner of a financially failing motel. Farmer Vincent, you see, is a highwayman Sweeney Todd, harvesting unwary travellers at night. Well, you have to wonder what gives his cooked meats such a unique flavour. The whole operation is based on his techniques for tenderising the meat and the produce of his secret garden.

It's a brutally observed spoof horror, well shot, highly entertaining, and very funny. There's satire, there's farce, there's irony, there's some visceral humour, and there's a chainsaw duel! What more could you ask for?

Summary Review: Camp Horror Classic

When you go into the woods today, you're in for a big surprise. When you go into the woods today you're not going to believe your eyes. But it ain't no teddy bear picnic . Three girls discover that two men are willing to do anything to impress Mother and what impresses Mother is watching her son commit acts of rape and murder. Now these women are prisoners and lowered to pawns in the game of checkers between two dim wits and their Maniac Mommy and the question becomes, can any of them escape, alive?

This is a true 80's horror classic, with a little bit of camp thrown in for fun! I can't say enough about this under seen little gem! For it's time and genre, the gore and killings are just fantastic. I really dig the script as well. I say that in my opinion, the acting is absolutely fantastic.

Summary Review: Very tasty little snack
Another 70's cannibal flick that is much better than expected.

You've got the hot, scantily-clad Ursula Andress and her crew on a quest through the jungles of New Guinea. They get ambushed by some blood thirsty savages of course. This tribe looks extremely heinous. Their masks are what really stood out for me in this movie. Freaky! When the maniacal tribe leader sees Ursula, he might develop a different kind of hunger.

You've got all your basic cannibal flick essentials--blood, gore, decapitations, nudity, violence with animals. The acting and dialogue are good enough not to hamper the story. It may not be extremely original, but hey, if it ain't broke...

The film was originally released in cinemas with an uncut 12 rating in 1984. However the rating did not go down well with viewers. Family groups were turned away and some local councils overruled the BBFC rating to allow for family viewing. So distributors had a rethink and BBFC category cuts were then made for a PG rated 1994 cinema re-release, and for the subsequent VHS release.

The film was later passed PG uncut for 2000 DVD but this wasn't released and the distributors continued with the cut PG version until 2003 when the film was released uncut on DVD with a PG rating. In 2013 the classification was uprated to 12 uncut for Blu-ray.

The distributors originally asked chief censor James Ferman for a PG rating for cinema release. However James Ferman was a bit heavy handed with his cuts list for a PG> He demanded the nearly total deletion of a very funny dialogue in a restaurant featuring several clever allusions to sex, eg cunning linguistics. The distributors were not impressed and decided to go with an uncut 12 rated cinema relea

After 5 months it was clear that many cinema goers were unhappy. Family groups were turned away and some local councils overruled the BBFC rating to allow for family viewing.

So distributors had a rethink and BBFC category cuts were then made for a PG rated version. This time round Ferman relented a little and just asked for a couple of lines to be deleted from the restaurant dialogue. The BBFC commented on the decision to pass the film 18 uncut:

The scene cut in 1990 takes place in a church and features two women masturbating. Shots of their encounter are interspersed with a recreation of the Stations of the Cross narrated by the women as they masturbate. It is implied that one woman uses a set of rosary beads to anally penetrate the other. The scene ends with a brief shot of a man injecting himself with an unspecified drug while sitting on the altar steps.

When the film was submitted in 1990, the common law in England and Wales offences of blasphemy and blasphemous libel (which applied only to Christianity) were still in force and so the BBFC was required to request cuts. In 2008, these laws were abolished nor has there been a prosecution for blasphemy in either Scotland or Northern Ireland since 2008, or for many years prior to that date.

The Board was asked to consider whether, in the absence of any breach of UK law, the cuts were still required The Board agreed that they were not.

Summary Review: Brought to life by Hammer

Hammer's executives had their pick of Universal International's horror icons and chose to remake The Mummy's Hand with the same team responsible for Dracula, Curse of Frankenstein and Revenge of Frankenstein. The Mummy also incorporates significant story elements from that film's sequel, The Mummy's Tomb. The film broke the box-office records set by Dracula the previous year, both in the UK and the U.S.

In the 1890s a team of British archaeologists discover the untouched tomb of Princess Ananka but accidentally bring the mummified body of her High Priest back to life.

Cushing it at the top of his form, and Lee makes the most of his limited opportunities to generate sympathy for the monster. The Mummy is one of the better looking Hammer films, thanks to Bernard Robinson's production designs and Jack Asher's cinematography. All round a very successful film but not for it's gore or horror, the film is very much family fayre.

The 2008 double disk boxset (released to coincide with the 3rd Mummy film) contains the uncut versions of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. The overall rating of the boxset is a family unfriendly "15", for some reason the distributors haven't pushed for a downgrade to a "12" (The Mummy's original rating). When originally showed in theaters, Belle's song "When Love Is Gone" was cut. Director Brian Henson protested this decision, but then head of Disney Jeffrey Katzenberg felt the song was too sad for a children's movie. The removal leaves the scene quite short and abrupt and damages the pacing. It was reinstated on all full screen home video copies of the film, including the laser disc (widescreen too), VHS home, and first DVD release, at the insistence of Brian Henson. For the Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition DVD, the full screen version includes "When Love Is Gone" and the widescreen version cuts the song. The UK re-release from Park Circus in 2012 includes the song. Even though the version shown on Disney+ is the Theatrical Cut, the song is still included as an extra for the first time in High Definition.

Summary review: Murder, Sex and Satanism

Michael is a successful actor, but he has a scandal in his past: at a tender age he knifed his father to death. Soon rude things begin happening and Michael fears a repeat of his nightmare past is in progress.

You don't hear much about it. It's a shame, because this is one of the most overlooked Italian horror films.

The plot is strange, twisted, and full of bizarre touches of nasty murder scenes, perverse sexuality, nudity, and some very creepy tones of Satanism and the black arts which more than likely will chill you to the bone.

The music is also effective in creating the creepy, stormy atmosphere of Satanism, murder and sex in a remote mansion in the countryside. The special effects are crude though.

This film is definitely not for everyone, but those who appreciate fine, classy Italian horror and do not mind complicated, twisted plotlines should enjoy it.

Summary Review: Overrated

Very, very overrated serial killer flick that has been compared to Maniac , Last House on Dead End Street and New York Ripper . Some reviewers have claimed that it is better than these three films.

It is not. It is gory in a juvenile, over-the-top kind of way and the coverage of some of the murders is adequate, but it is incredibly fragmented, totally devoid of characterization and plot development and, overall, amateurish in its execution.

UK: The Original Theatrical Version was banned by the BBFC for:
  • 2008 TLA DVD

The BBFC commented:

Murder Set Pieces is a US made feature focussing on the activities of a psychopathic sexual serial killer, who, throughout the film, is seen raping, torturing and murdering his victims. There is a clear focus on sex or sexual behaviour accompanied by non-consensual pain, injury and humiliation. Young children are among those terrorised and killed.

In making a decision as to whether a video work is suitable for classification, the Board applies the criteria set out in its current Classification Guidelines, published in 2005. These are the result of an extensive process of public consultation and research and reflect the balance of media effects research, the requirements of UK law and the attitudes of the UK public. The Board's Guidelines clearly set out the Board's serious concerns about the portrayal of violence, most especially when the violence is sexual or sexualised, but also when depictions portray or encourage: callousness towards victims, aggressive attitudes, or taking pleasure in pain or humiliation.

The Guidelines for the '18' category requested for this video work state that such concerns 'will not normally override the wish that adults should be free to choose their own entertainment' but make clear that exceptions to this general rule may be made in certain areas, including 'where material or treatment appears to the Board to risk harm to individuals or, through their behaviour, to society – eg any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts… [and that the Board] may intervene with portrayals of sexual violence which might, eg eroticise or endorse sexual assault'. Under the heading of 'Rejects', the Guidelines identify as of particular concern 'graphic rape or torture', 'portrayals of children in a sexualised or abusive context' and 'sex accompanied by non-consensual pain, injury or humiliation'.

The Board's position that scenes of violence with the potential to trigger sexual arousal may encourage a harmful association between violence and sexual gratification is reflected in research and consistent with public opinion. It is the Board's carefully considered view that to issue a certificate to MURDER-SET-PIECES, even if statutorily confined to adults, would involve risk of harm within the terms of the Video Recordings Act 1984, would be inconsistent with the Board's Guidelines, and would be unacceptable to the public.

The Board considered whether the issue could be dealt with through cuts. However, given the unacceptable content features throughout, and that what remains is essentially preparatory and set-up material for the unacceptable scenes, cuts are not a viable option in this case and the work is therefore refused a classification.

The BBFC commented:

Mushroom Growing Made Easy is a one-hour video work offering the viewer clear and detailed guidance on the cultivation of 'magic mushrooms'. At present, the cultivation and possession of fresh and untreated psilocybe mushrooms is not apparently an offence under UK law. Nonetheless, the Board is conscious that the Drugs Bill currently passing through Parliament will have the effect of making the cultivation and possession of such mushrooms, even in their fresh state, illegal. It would be premature for the Board to classify this video work when it is likely that, within a short period of time, it will become a clear incitement to a criminal offence involving a Class A drug. Regardless of the current legal situation, the video in any case shows how to cultivate an organism that contains what is undoubtedly a Class A drug (psilocin) and which, if altered or treated in any way (for example by drying), would even now result in the commission of a serious criminal offence.

The BBFC's Guidelines clearly set out the Board's serious concerns about the portrayal of illegal drugs, particularly when the work in question promotes or encourages their use. The Board's Guidelines clearly state that "No work taken as a whole may promote or encourage the use of illegal drugs". Furthermore, under the terms of the Video Recordings Act 1984, the BBFC is required, when making a determination as to whether a video work is suitable for classification, to "have special regard (among the other relevant factors) to any harm that may be caused to potential viewers or, through their behaviour to society, by the manner in which the work deals with [...] illegal drugs" [Video Recordings Act 1984 section 4A(1)].

The Board considered whether cutting the work would be a viable alternative to refusing a classification certificate but found that, because the entire purpose of the video is to assist and encourage in cultivating an organism which contains a Class A drug, this was not a viable option.

It is our conclusion therefore that this video work is in conflict with the Board's published Guidelines and the requirements of the Video Recordings Act. In line with its specific duties under the Video Recordings Act, the Board is required to treat material of this kind very carefully indeed and the Board therefore finds this to be unacceptable for a classification certificate to be issued to it.

Summary Review: Subtle humour with pure suspense

It's a shame that Mute Witness never got the attention it deserved. When I first saw it, it scared the bejeezus out of me.

The story is set in a an old Russian factory that's being used to make (funnily enough) a horror movie. The heroine Billy Hughes is the mute special effects artist who is also working on the film. However, she finds herself locked in the factory by accident, and in trying to get out, sees a snuff movie being made.

What follows is some of the most gripping, suspenseful filmmaking since Alfred Hitchcock. From the dramatic, disorientating, and humorous scene that introduces the film, right through to the many rapid-fire plot twists at the end.

The BBFC explained their 18 rating:

MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRL is a romantic comedy with gross-out humour. This work, which is the DVD release of an extended version of the film, was passed '18' for very strong language, strong sex references and nudity. It includes material that was cut (for category) from the '15' rated UK theatrical version.

There are three uses of very strong language in this film, two of which are very clear and one that is much less discernible. However, although none of the uses are aggressively delivered or directed, the first occurs very early in the work, before the viewer can get to grips with the plot and before the characters have become established. As such it is best placed at '18' and indeed the distributor chose to remove that particular use of the term in order to secure a '15' classification category for the UK theatrical release of the film. There are over forty uses of strong language in the film.

Although much of the material can be contained at '15', some of the verbal sex references in this work, which were cut from the '15' rated theatrical UK release, are very strong. They reflect sexual activity more commonly associated with hard core sex works that are inappropriate for 15 year olds and are best placed at the adult classification category.

MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRL also includes scenes of soft drug use, mild violence and breast nudity.

Simon Diabolik comments on Facebook:

Disappointing the SF blu isn't a scan from the uncut negative, less cut definitely, but far from uncut. And the same in terms of restored footage as the previous Lions Gate U.S blu ray.

Interestingly the UK theatrical release featured the climactic arm ripping inserted. I know as a dear friend who worked for UIP had the enviable task of splicing the footage in from a reel of censored gore distributed to most territories.

From review from insidepulse.com :

This Collector's Edition comes with both the original theatrical cut and a second disc with the Uncut Version. While the story always was that nearly 8 minutes was spliced away for the rating, there's only 3 minutes added back. But it's 3 minutes that really rounds out the killing scenes. Now you get the full effect that brings even more blood to My Bloody Valentine

US: The definitive Special Edition and is MPAA Unrated for:

January 2009. See article from shocktillyoudrop.com : Lost Footage

Fans may balk that the new disc is not definitively uncut as it still lacks a few oft-rumored shots. Sadly, those choice bits have indeed been declared MIA as director George Mihalka discovered when he was asked to do a director's cut roughly six years ago. We went through the vaults and found out all of that negative has corroded or disappeared. What the DVD, furthermore the new print of the film, contains is the remaining salvaged footage found in producer John Dunning's storage space.

There was a scene with the two kids in the mine and they're joined together forever, Mihalka chuckles citing one still excised sequence. There was a whole set up scene to that. They're just necking and Tom's lying on top of [Harriet] and the miner comes in and puts the [drill bit] through him. She's got her eyes closed and thinks he's just being a little frisky. She opens her mouth and her eyes just as he bleeds into her mouth. Then the miner goes whoomp! And [skewers] them both . That scene had to be taken out totally. It has disappeared and we'll never see it.

See review from fearnet.com : 30 years late

So the flick holds up surprisingly well for a low-budget Canadian import from 1981 ... but did we really need a Special Edition DVD? Absolutely, says me. Ask anyone of my approximate age who was also raised on a steady diet of VHS and Fangoria if they'd like to see the "uncut pre-MPAA" version of, say, Friday the 13th or My Bloody Valentine, and you'd get a response of HELL YES!

Film fanatics always want to see the "trimmed" footage, especially if it's something that showcases some impressively creative gore-gravy ... and the new stuff found in My Bloody Valentine is pretty nifty indeed.

Overall, this 'new' version runs maybe 50 seconds longer than the VHS cut, but one can clearly see that the MPAA was aiming to minimize EVERY kill scene, regardless of how much work actually went into it.

So it's almost 30 years late, but I say bring on the splatter.

From IMDb:

  • Gore was cut from the pre-credits sequence where the woman is pushed backwards onto a pickaxe.
  • Mabel's mutilated body was originally on screen for much longer.
  • The scene where the bartender is playing peek-a-boo with the Harry Warden dummy was edited so that no blood is shown. He was pickaxed up his chin and out his left eye, then dragged along the ground with his eyeball hanging out.
  • The face-boiling of Dave was shortened so you don't see the after-effects while he is dying.
  • Graphic head-on shots of Sylvia's shower impalement were deleted.
  • A stock footage close-up of the miner's light being shown at the camera replaces the bulk of a shot of Hollis' bleeding face after he has been nail-gunned. In the widely-seen release, the scene picks up after Hollis has mostly turned away.
  • Howard's hanging is shortened. In the original print, he was decapitated. The decapitation was cut out, so it looks like his body just falls, stops short when the end of the wire is reached, sprays blood all over Patty and Sarah, and then resumes falling. Not only do the cuts imposed render the scene senseless, but they also make it so there's no payoff to Hollis' earlier comment that Howard would lose his head if it weren't attached.
  • Axel's left arm gets trapped under rocks in the cave-in at the end. He rips it off to get away, leaving his limb behind to horrify everybody else. But since the key footage of the arm removal all had to be removed itself, it is hard to see exactly what happened.

My Brother's Wedding is a US drama from 1983, about a man torn between family obligation and his errant friend. It was passed 12A due to a moderate sex scene. The BBFC guidelines at 12A state that sexual activity may be implied and that is all that occurs here. A man is seen persuading a woman to accompany him to the back of a shop, and later we see him lying on top of her after sex - nudity is implied but not seen, and we do not see any of the sex itself.

My Brother's Wedding also contains one scene in which there is a stand-off between a man with a knife and another man with a gun. Neither weapon is seen in use but this moderate threat involving realistic weapons was also thought to be best placed at 12A .

The BBFC further commented in the 2014 Annual Report:

There is one use of the term spastic , when a young man is talking about his unruly dog. With no condemnation of the use, and in line with what the public tells us about such language, the term was unacceptable at U.

Cut by the BBFC for 18 rated VHS in 1998. Later rated 18 uncut for 2008 DVD. Uncut and MPA Unrated in the US.

Summary Notes: Don't Miss

My Dear Killer is an excellent example of the giallo genre. The plot revolves around a series of murders committed by an unknown assailant intent on keeping the deaths of a small child and her father unsolved. As is the case with most gialli, there's a detective one step behind the murderer, a lush and creepy music score (this time by Morricone), a houseful of suspects, creative and illogical murders, and a downbeat and melancholy plot.

What elevates this one above all the others made in that banner year for the genre (1971), though, is the detail given to the script and production. The characters are all fully formed and functional to the story, which itself is well thought-out and clever. The resolution is well-handled, and even if the killer's identity is impossible to guess beforehand, the means in which he (or she) is finally discovered will make you smile. Add to this one of the saddest musical-score main themes in movie history, featuring a woman's voice singing a haunting child's melody, and you have a giallo that fans of the genre should definitely not miss.
