Media controversy
The film made the news after the BBFC consumer advice was re-worded from:
dangerous behaviour, mild threat, mild sex references, mild bad language.
The BBFC changed the wording of its guidance after the Daily Mail ran a story about the PG rating for the film. It seems that the Paddington author Michael Bond was totally amazed at the term mild sex references used by
the BBFC. After an approach from the film's distributor the BBFC altered the term mild sex references to innuendo . The distributor also asked for clarity to the frequency of mild bad language, and the BBFC duly obliged by adding the
descriptor, infrequent. So the consumer advice now reads:
dangerous behaviour, mild threat, innuendo, infrequent mild bad language.

2009 Ayngaran R2 DVD
The BBFC commented:
The video release is longer than the film which was passed 12A and contains stronger material. The video release was passed at 15 for strong violence and hard drug use.
The strong violence
occurs in several action sequences. The scenes are stylised and somewhat fantastical, but contain clear detail of
The initial action sequence also contains brief shots of a man snorting cocaine. As the sole brief moments
of hard drug use, the scenes met the BBFC Guidelines at 15 which require that Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encorage drug misuse .
The video includes a passing reference
to rape which occurs in the broad comic context that characterises the film when two men mistake another man, who has disguised himself in female clothing, for a woman. The characters involved are portrayed as unglamourous and quite stupid, and
the reference does not carry any encouragement or endorsement of sexual violence.

v Padmavat
- 2017 India historical romance by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Padmavat is a 2017 India historical romance by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor.
Originally passed 12A uncut by the BBFC but controversy raged in India
about its wrong history and the film was cut by Indian censors. The distributors then resubmitted the film in its cut form and again passed 12A by the BBFC.
Rani Padmavati (aka Padmini) is said to be one of the most beautiful women to ever exist. This real life story is epitome of Love and sacrifice between Rajput
Queen Padmavati and Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, the Rajput ruler of Mewar. Their perfect life took unfortunate turn when Allauddin Khilji's lustful eyes gazed upon Queen Padmavati. Alauddin Khilji is known as one of the most brutal rulers of the Khilji
dynasty, who ascended the throne by killing his father-in-law, his brother-in-laws and their uncles. He was known for attacking states, only for their land and women. And, the motive behind the attack on Mewar was none other than royal Rani Padmavati.
Chittorgarh fort, today, stands as an epitome of the true Rajputana spirit, loyalty, fidelity and bravery and a symbol of women power.

In 2017 ten people complained to the BBFC that the film misrepresented a revered figure in India. The BBFC fulfils its role by
providing age classifications and publishing advice (BBFCinsight) for individual films and videos. We do this without infringing the right of adults to choose what they view provided that it remains within UK law and is not potentially harmful. We seek
to ensure that films and videos reach the widest audience that is appropriate for their theme and treatment. There is nothing in Padmaavat that is unacceptable at the 12A category.

Summary Review: Moderately Worthwhile
The film focuses on the ups and downs of two doomed souls, Bobby and Helen, who wasted their lives in a downward spiral into hell without any realistic
thought for tomorrow.
Panic has a bittersweet taste of an independent film: improvisational, free-form and razor-sharp realistic. There is no music throughout the film, only dialogues and real life sounds. It tastes
like a stale cigarette. Depressive mood and sordidness of Manhattan's Upper West Side are reflected perfectly. Intense and disturbing depiction of heroine shots are almost documentary nature.
The performances of Al Pacino
and Kitty Winn are top notch. The role earned Winn the Best Actress Award at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival.
The only downside is that it drags along at snails pace. It's moderately worthwhile and falls short of being a
classic.

UK: MVM have announced that the series has been passed uncut by the BBFC for:
The BBFC requested the
compulsory cut to the eighth part of Paranoia Agent, called Happy Family Planning. This a mostly self-contained story, a macabre black comedy. The story involves three people who meet online, intending to kill themselves together. Two of the trio are
adult men, but they're shocked to realise the third person is a preteen girl, who seems to regard suicide as a game.
In one scene, the three characters try to hang themselves in the mountain. In the unedited episode, the girl is
shown bouncing happily up and down with the rope around her neck, chanting Swing! Swing! (finally, she breaks the tree branch, sending them all tumbling). However, this scene, lasting 80 seconds, was cut entirely from the UK DVD of the episode, following
the ruling by the BBFC.
Responding to inquiries about the cut in the past, the BBFC has made its reasoning clear. Although the relevant DVD was rated 18, the BBFC still judged that the scene of a child enjoying being hanged was
irresponsible and harmful, and that underage children could be influenced by the scene.

Paranormal Activity is a US horror film that presents as a case history conveyed through hand-held camera footage seemingly filmed by the performers and which relates how a young American
couple are threatened by paranormal manifestations in their new house. It was passed 15 for strong language and threat.
At 15 , BBFC Guidelines for language state that There may be frequent use of strong
language (eg 'fuck'). and this film contains strong language that fits within this guideline and the frequency of which exceeds the 12A/12 rubric.
As for horror, this film's content exceeds the 12A/12 Guideline which states that
Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained. . This film features frequent strong threat and menace from the opening minutes until the final scene as the couple's camera
records offscreen sounds and manifestations that graduate in frequency and intensity to the point where the threat becomes tangible and physical. The film's hand-held camerawork lends the horror and intensity a greater sense of realism and immediacy as
the film's power is not reliant on gore or special effects but instead, credibly depicts an unknown force with growing power overwhelming the lives of a young couple in a realistic domestic setting. The lack of sadistic or sexualised elements meant that
the film is permissible at 15 , but the strength, frequency and sustained nature of the threat and terrorisation meant that it was not allowable at 12A/12 .
Paranormal Activity also contains an oblique
moderate sex reference to unseen sexual activity, additional mild sex references and mild language.

US: Cut and MPAA rated PG-13 for thematic material including disturbing violent images, sexual situations and some drug content.
Nudity and drug use seemingly cut
in the US resulting in the downgrade of the consumer advice from the previous submission that was rated PG-13 for thematic material including disturbing violent imagery, nudity and sexual situations, and for brief drug use.
According to the BBFC it was cut because it showed a close-up of a needle being used for ear piercing: This seemed worryingly imitable for a PG comedy which was ideal in every way for an audience of
primary school children.

Summary Notes
An American businessman
visits London and is horrified to discover his nubile teenage daughter has become involved with a gang of thuggish "beatniks". Her involvement leads to wild parties, sex, death and necrophilia.
The striking thing
about this film is the complete lack of compassion or emotion shown by the cast towards each other and the situation they find themselves in and this results in the film having a somewhat depressing undertone.
However, it
is always a pleasure and most interesting to see a young Oliver Reed, and an even younger Louise Sorel makes a notable appearance with a good supporting cast of solid British character actors.

Summary Notes
A depiction of the last twelve hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, on the day of his crucifixion in Jerusalem. The story opens in the Garden of Olives where Jesus has gone to pray
after the Last Supper. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, the controversial Jesus--who has performed 'miracles' and has publicly announced that he is 'the Son of God'--is arrested and taken back within the city walls of Jerusalem. There, the leaders of the
Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy; subsequently, his trial results with the leaders condemning him to his death. Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of Palestine, for his sentencing. Pilate listens to the
accusations leveled at Jesus by the Pharisees. Realizing that his own decision will cause him to become embroiled in a political conflict, Pilate defers to King Herod in deciding the matter of how to persecute Jesus.

With Kevin James, Keir O'Donnell and Jayma Mays.
The BBFC suggested cuts for PG that were implemented for:
2009 Sony Blu-ray
2009 Sony R2 DVD
2009 cinema release
The BBFC explained:
This film was originally shown to the BBFC in an unfinished version. The BBFC advised the company that the film was likely to receive a 12A classification but that the requested PG certificate
could be achieved by making changes to two scenes. In particular the BBFC suggested that a scene in which a man has the lid of a sun bed slammed onto him several times be reduced; and that an extended fight sequence also be reduced to remove some of the
strongest blows. In this scene specifically, it was suggested that a blow to the face with a skateboard and dialogue which introduces and emphasises a headbutt be removed. When the finished version of the film was submitted these reductions had been made
satisfactorily and the film was classified PG .

The Pawnbroker is a 1964 USA drama by Sidney Lumet. Starring Rod Steiger, Geraldine
Fitzgerald and Brock Peters.
Uncut by the BBFC but the censors seem unsure as to the rating. The cinema release in 1964 was X rated, for 1998 VHS it was 12 rated, but for 2021 Blu-ray release the rating had been elevated to 15.
Noted as the first Hollywood film
since the Hayes Code was introduced that featured a topless scene, a rather serious flashback to the Holocaust.
After the filmmakers appealed to the MPAA's appeals board to oppose censoring the film, it became the first U.S. film to show a nude
woman from the waist up and be granted a Production Code Seal.
[Note that a year earlier the first modern day topless scene appeared in a Hollywood movie Promises! Promises! showing Jayne Mansfield's breasts. However this film did not get MPAA
approval and had to be released unrated].

v Payback
- 1999 US crime film by Brian Helgeland.
Payback is a 1999 US crime film by Brian Helgeland. With Mel Gibson, Gregg Henry and Maria Bello.
Cut by the BBFC in 1990. Uncut for the 2009 Special edition but no sign of
waived cuts in the BBFC database. Uncut in the US.
Summary Notes : Two Very Different Versions
There were reasons writer-director Brian Helgeland's cut of Payback was dismissed
by distributors Paramount and Warner Bros., then heavily re-shot and re-tooled by Mel Gibson's production company, Icon Entertainment.
Those reasons are explained in detail by Gibson, Helgeland, and others in the special
features of Payback: The Director's Cut (Special Collector's Edition). Among them: Helgeland's version was too dark. America wasn't ready in 1999 to see Gibson play an unapologetic, 1970s-style antihero who might not get exactly what he wants. Audiences
didn't have the patience to wait for answers to their story questions. A dog dies. (A big no-no.)
