From the BBFC:

Taken is a thriller about a retired spy who must rescue his daughter and her friend from a sex-trafficking gang. The film was passed '18' for 'strong violence and an extended scene of torture'. Besides a kidnapping scene where the terrified daughter is dragged screaming from under the bed where she is hiding, the film features several other scenes of strong violence - notably a cold-blooded shooting of a villain's innocent wife, a moment where the ex-spy is throttled in close-up leading to a heavy beating of a villain with a fire-extinguisher, and a fight where the ex-spy repeatedly plunges a broken bottle into the chest of a man who has slashed him with a curved knife.

The torture scene, which is longer and stronger than the same scene in the film release, involves the kidnapper being electrocuted several times by the ex-spy as he tries to force the man to reveal his daughter's whereabouts. The man is seen to judder, a spike driven is into his leg, and his face shows his agony. He is left screaming off-screen at the end of the scene when the ex-spy leaves him being electrocuted. This scene, in dwelling on the torture, exceeded the boundaries of the strong violence permitted by the '15' Guidelines which state that 'Violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury', and tipped the classification into '18'

In addition, the film also contains a crunchy scene where a man is shown to be hit forcefully by a truck at a distance, and a muffled use of strong language.

Collider interviewed the Director of Taken 2 , Olivier Megaton and revealed that his was somewhat perplexed at the censorship process to cut the movie down to a US PG-13. He called for a PG-15 where he feels that the movie would be better placed.

He said that the movie would be released MPAA Unrated on DVD and Blu-ray and that this would restore about 10 minutes of footage that was removed from the fight scenes.

See pictorial cuts details from movie-censorship.com

The PG-13 version is 6:12s shorter. A fair amount of this is filler material, cut for timing reasons. There is also plenty of material removed to reduce violence. Eg Reducing the blood color, reducing or removing the sound of cracking bones. Even in the unrated version, the film is not as violent as Taken 1.

UK: A doubly pre-cut Version was passed 15 for strong language, sex and sex references for:

  • 2011 Technicolor/Momentum Online
  • 2011 Technicolor/Momentum RB Blu-ray
  • 2011 Technicolor/Momentum R2 DVD
  • 2010 cinema release.

This version seems to have been distributed worldwide.

The BBFC noted that the distributor Momentum further cut the film just to get a toned down customer advice:

Tamara Drewe was originally classified 15 on 9 July 2010 with the consumer advice Contains very strong language, strong sex and sex references . Subsequent to this to company submitted a revised version with minor changes in two scenes:

  • In one case, some explanatory captions had been removed [perhaps because of the reference to 'Jailbaiit Jody']
  • in the other case, a single use of very strong language had been removed. ['Lucky cunt' was replaced by 'Lucky cow']

This amended version was classified 15 on 28 July with the revised consumer advice Contains strong language, sex and sex references .

The BBFC further explained the 15 rating:

TAMARA DREWE is a film about a young woman who returns to her home town and ruffles feathers within the community. It was classified 15 for strong language, sex and sex references.

At 15 the BBFC's Guidelines state that There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, 'fuck'). The strongest terms (for example, 'cunt') may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable . During TAMARA DREWE there are over thirty uses of strong language and one mouthed but inaudible use of very strong language, which is drowned out by background noise.

The Guidelines at 15 also state that Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context . The strong sex in the film includes a scene in which a man thrusts into a woman during sex. In another sequence, a character takes off her knickers and lies on a counter as a man stands in front of her prior to offscreen sex. However neither of these scenes contain any strong visual detail. The verbal sex references include a teenage schoolgirl fantasising about a man licking her teapot lids , and elsewhere she makes a reference to her v-plates melting . She also fantasies about lying on a bed with a man entering the room before lifting her into his arms, but the scene ends before any sexual activity takes place.

Throughout the film there is occasional sight of nudity, such as when Tamara is seen lying naked on her bed with her buttocks visible. Other scenes also feature her naked, but without any strong detail. The film also contains a brief verbal reference to a character having grown marijuana in the past, while there is occasional sight of characters (including teenage girls) smoking cigarettes. In one scene, two characters fantasise that another may have tried to commit suicide and this is represented by a vision of the would-be victim lying on the floor beside a bottle of pills, with vomit on her clothing. However this is merely a fantasy, with the character in question not carrying out such an act.

53s 1856:51s Japanese sex film by Sato Toshiki (Visionary)

The video was cut when submitted in 1997

Thanks to Bleach on the Melon Farmers Forum :

During opening sequence, the impact of the sex scenes was reduced by keeping the sound going but replacing the strongest visuals with shots of the mens's faces remembering or imagining the experience. (One scene of both men brooding required retention of both vision and sound of their silence).

Cuts were made as follows -

When fat, middle-aged man recalls or imagines scene of mutual masturbation on commuter train, explicitness of visuals was reduced by replacing the four strongest sections with shots of him thinking, as follows:

  1. After woman's hand is inserted in man's unzipped trousers and she starts to masturbate him, cut away (vision only) after brief LS of them standing in corridor and insert MCU of him thinking, followed by bug CU of same, resuming on tight shot of their heads on train
  2. When camera pans from their hands masturbating each other to tighter shot of her hand masturbating him, replace remainder of this shot with low-angle CU of him thinking, resuming on tight shot of their heads
  3. After above tight shot, insert big CU of him thinking to replace CU of masturbation, resuming on tight shot of his hand insider her underwear, panning to include her hand in his shorts
  4. After brief establishment of above masturbation shot, insert big CU of him thinking, followed by separate insert of a high angle mid shot of him at table, followed by separate insert of wide angle of two-shot of both men at separate tables, resuming on tight shot of mutual masturbation. After she climaxes and he watches her walking away in station, reduce younger man's memories of raping his girlfriend, as follows -
  1. After he is established sitting astride her, remove all sight of him forcibly removing her bra, replacing visuals with insert of very tight profile of him, followed by separate mid-shot of him sitting at table on right of frame, followed by wide angle of both men sitting in silence (synch sound), resuming on tight shot of violent struggle on bed
  2. after above struggle, insert CU of rapist remembering as he drinks tea, followed by wider shot as he puts down cup, resuming on tight shot of rape as he turns her over
  3. after he turns her onto her back and begins to insert, replace visuals with CU of him thinking morosely to left of frame, followed by repeat of same insert to increase length, resuming on rape just before he kisses her and she begins to respond.

Three elderly distinguished gentlemen are searching for some excitement in life. In a nightly ceremony they restore the count back to life. The three men killed Dracula's servant and as a revenge, the count makes sure that the gentlemen are killed one by one by their own sons.

The acting by the entire cast was superb, especially Ralph Bates. The costumes, art direction, photography, and directing was one of the best in the Dracula series. Atmosphere and the great performances makes this a must see.

Frank Ripploh is gay and a bit of a rascal. He keeps his personal life and teaching separate, but he sometimes corrects student papers in public toilets as he waits to score. One evening, he meets Bernd. They become lovers. How long can Frank keep his sexual orientation out of the classroom? Things come to a head during Berlin's annual Queen's Ball and the morning after.

An excellent film, worth watching. Anybody wanting to learn about the secret lives many gay men have to live to have their sexuality kept secret should watch this film.

BBFC
1:43s
18 90:28s UK: Passed 18 after 1:43s of BBFC cuts for:
  • 1994 Pride VHS

This time, the director agrees to the cuts because they are less heavy than the cuts originally required in 1981 (some sight of erections and anal detail is permitted).

  • At 10 minutes - During scene in toilet, clear sight of man's anus removed.
  • At 11 minutes - During same scene, sight of erect penis being touched by man after it is poked through hole in cubicle wall ('glory hole') removed.
  • At 41 minutes - Explicit gay sex scene reduced by removing explicit sight of fellatio, anal sex, masturbation, ejaculation and handling of penis.
  • At 47 minutes - During medical examination in STD clinic, shots of gaping anus removed.
  • At 55 minutes - During 'film within a film' (in fact an educational film made by the German authorities for use in schools to warn children about strangers) , shots showing man's hand on boy's crotch and man apparently forcing boy's hand into his trousers removed. [Supposedly under the Protection of Children Act, although because of the close shots used you can't actually tell if it's the boy's crotch or the boy's hand].
  • At 77 minutes - Golden shower scene cut to remove all sight of stream of urine coming from man's penis and going over other man's face and mouth. [This is done in a single continuous pan so it is clearly real].

  • 1982 cinema release

The cuts were:

  • The educational film was cut to avoid falling foul of the Child Protection Act.
BBFC

X cert UK: Passed X (18) after extensive cuts for:
  • 1981 cinema release (but not actually released)

The BBFC required extensive cuts to explicit sex, explicit anal detail, urolagnia and a scene that could be in breach of the Protection of Children Act. This was to a (genuine) German educational film called Christian and his Stamp Collector Friend , all about the dangers of speaking to strange men, extracts from which are shown in the film.

The director refused to make cuts and withdrew his film from classification (hence no record of this submission on the BBFC website)
