Summary Review: Efficient and Entertaining

Nominally made by BHP Productions for contractual reasons, but nevertheless it was actually made by the Hammer Films team.

Was it supernatural force or psychotic compulsion . . . that drove five maddened murderers to destroy themselves? ... Or maybe just a cat.

The film moves confidently and swiftly along. Director John includes enough shocks to hide the holes in the plot, and to keep it interesting. The cast do their jobs efficiently and entertainingly.

Review from US Amazon : White-haired villain

Watch closely as this white-haired villain goes from school to school challenging and destroying anyone who knows stick fighting. This guy is really good with his stick/pole and it's very difficult for others to beat him. What is kind of bizarre about this one is that anyone who knows stick fighting is his enemy. I like this flick so much that I transferred it to my PDA and watch it sometimes at work. Some of the stick fighting scenes will have you seriously cracking up. You will surely play a few of these scenes over and over again!

The plot keeps you awake throughout! Definitely in my top 5%. You wont go wrong with this one at all.

Depressing tale about a world of the undead and a woman's trek to get home to her boyfriend's house.

The story is about a girl trying to get back to her apartment, that's it. There was some crappy gore and a xxx scene involving the female lead, her boyfriend and a pistol (a pellet handgun in reality). I threw away the DVD, just as I threw away my money when I bought it.

Fisting at the BBFC

The BBFC commented:

Shelley, is a Danish horror film about a couple who are unable to have children and ask their maid to act as a surrogate. The Board viewed a scene in which the husband uses his fist to penetrate his wife. The scene depicts a consensual sex act within a dramatic work. It is darkly lit and the fisting is achieved using special effects.

The Board considered the distinction between sex works whose primary purpose is to sexually arouse and works which contain strong sex scenes as part of a wider narrative. Shelley is an example of the latter and the Board considered that in this context, fisting would not be considered contrary to the Obscene Publications Act and therefore an 18 uncut rating was appropriate.

cut 15 cert85:22s 2008 UK thriller by Eran Creevy

The BBFC cut the 2009 cinema release and 2009 DVD/Blu-ray: Distributor chose to remove some aggressive and directed uses of very strong language ('cunt') in order to achieve a '15' classification. An '18' uncut was available to the distributor.

The BBFC explained further:

Shifty is an urban thriller set in the outskirts of London. After an absence of four years a young man returns to the area in which he was raised. He is alarmed to discover that his best friend has become a drug dealer. The film was passed 15 for very strong language and hard drug use.

The BBFC Guidelines at 15 state that there may be frequent use of strong language (e.g. fuck') but the strongest terms (e.g. 'cunt') will be acceptable only where justified by context. The former term is used extensively throughout the film and the latter on four occasions. The four uses of very strong language were considered to be contextually justified and allowable at '15 in this case.

The Guidelines at 15 also allow drug taking to be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. This film includes many scenes of hard drug use and we see characters snorting cocaine and smoking crack pipes. There is also see a scene of implied heroin injection and several instances of reefer smoking. However, all the drug users in the film are depicted as wastrels and the dangers of using Class A drugs are clearly spelt out.

Shifty also includes infrequent scenes of violence. These fall fairly and squarely within 15 classification category parameters, in which violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury.

Summary Review: Visionary vampire film

A young honeymooning couple stop for the night at an ancient castle. Unbeknownst to them, the castle is home to a horde of vampires, who have their own plans for the couple.

No one makes movies like Jean Rollin, and this is his masterpiece. Like most of his visions it seems to be about innocence and corruption, the attraction Evil has to Good, (and vice versa,) and the discovery of beauty in the unlikeliest of places.

This movie is very sexy, very slow, very weird. The music, lighting, absurd dialogue, and slow pacing help create a more poetic and imagistic type of film than we're used to here in the go-go States.

Initially reviled in its native land (some critics took exception to the fact the film was largely funded by the Canadian taxpayer), Shivers is an intensely claustrophobic, subversive masterpiece and an essential entry in the oeuvre of one of the horror genre s most gifted auteurs. Some 40 years after its release, it still retains its power to shock.

Starliner Island is an idyllic community. Cut off from the rest of the world, the luxury apartment block affords its occupants the chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city. But this isolation is to prove fatal when a new breed of parasite a combination of aphrodisiac and venereal disease which arouses sexual aggression in its hosts is let loose in the building, resulting in an orgy terror and mayhem.

thanks to GrindhouseDave. See example cut scene 1 and cut scene 2 from vine.co. Furthermore the cuts are made obvious by jolts on the soundtrack.

It seems that Cronenberg himself signed-off the pre-cut print without noticing the cuts. And Arrow didn't notice either at least before producing all the discs.

Arrow have made a statement on Facebook :

We are currently looking into this issue and hope to have an update very soon. Just to clarify, our release of Shivers contains a new restoration personally supervised and approved by Director David Cronenberg and which was produced by Tiff Cinematheque Quebec at Technicolor in 2013.

We are unsure as to the reasons why part of Shivers appears to have been shortened except that it doesn't appear to be the results of any conscious act of censorship, as many similar scenes would have been removed as well if that were the case. It may have been Cronenberg's decision to excise this material due to damage to the original materials used, but at this point that's only speculation on our part.

Unlike Zombie Flesh Eaters, this isn't the result of an authoring or encoding error, as there is nothing technically wrong with our disc. Unlike many of our releases, we weren't in any way involved with the restoration of this film, so we're having to direct our questions to those who oversaw it. Just to reiterate, we are making enquiries to all the parties involved and hope to have a definitive answer to this very soon.

From BBFC Case Study :

In his autobiography What the Censor Saw , former BBFC Secretary John Trevelyan stated that If mental illness is treated seriously, it can be entirely acceptable as material for a film, but if treated sensationally I would find it totally unacceptable.

On 2 October 1963, writer-director-producer Samuel Fuller's black and white crime thriller Shock Corridor was submitted to the BBFC for classification, and presented some familiar problems.

The BBFC Examiners notes described the film as a sensationalised picture of life in an American asylum , and one examiner noted that Shock Corridor shocked us . Their concerns included Cathy's profession and appearance as a stripper (although the latter aspect is described as being rather tame'); the incest references; the murder motive; a scene where Barrett encounters a ward full of 'nymphomaniacs ; a scene of electro-shock treatment; a nightmare sequence and a fight scene. Their report concluded We are satisfied that cutting would be impracticable and that a certificate should be refused.

The film was then referred to the BBFC's Secretary, John Trevelyan. He viewed the film with two Examiners and the BBFC's President, and they agreed that this film should not be passed . As well as the issues previously noted, they believed that the film presents a mental hospital in a light that would be considered objectionable in this country and that the film could not be cut to make it acceptable.

Trevelyan also had concerns about Cathy's strip-tease, the suggestion that a sane person could fake insanity to get committed to a mental hospital, the suggestion that committal to a mental hospital could turn a sane person insane and its potentially harmful effect on mentally disturbed viewers .

Trevelyan sent a rejection letter to the film's UK distributor, stating that The film portrays a picture of mental hospital life which is far removed from that in mental hospitals in this country, and which could well cause grave concern to people who have friends and relatives with mental illness.

Summary Review : A great film

Shogun Assassin is actually an amalgam of two 1972 films titled Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance and Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx . The producer decided to join the best bits of these two films (using around 10 minutes of the first film as a pre-credits flashback sequence to introduce the characters).

A great samurai warrior served his Shogun honorably. The Shogun however grew paranoid and sought to destroy all those who might stand to oppose his rule. He sent his ninja spies to the samurai's home. The ninjas failed to kill the samurai, but did kill his beloved wife. From then on, the samurai swore to seek out the Shogun and avenge the death of his love. The samurai roams the countryside with his toddler son taking on mercenary work for money until the final battle with the Shogun's three Masters of Death.

Shogun Assassin is a great film. Much "controversy" has arisen over the years regarding this film having been cobbled together from two other films in the Lone Wolf series. I think that what has been achieved is an extremely entertaining, fast-paced piece of action. By eliminating non-essential story lines and including a voice over narration, the action moves at break neck speed. The amount of blood spilled is so over the top as to be cartoonish, which only adds to the uniqueness of the movie.

Review from UK Amazon : Great martial arts film

This is a great martial arts film. The main setting is the underground world of shootfigting, brutal cage fights with weapons where opponents fight to the death.

Entering this dangerous world are two good guys who are fighting for the money to keep their karate school from closing down. These guys have been trained by the world undefeated champion bolo yeung who is hard as nails. The two guys get in over their heads and one quits while the other chooses to carry on. The scene is set for a show down as bolo yeung and his disciple come to the rescue and fight with the bad guy from the karate kid movies.

This film takes all the good bits from your favourite martial arts films and turns them into a fresh faced exciting new film. It has light hearted moments and some supriseingly good acting. No martial arts film collection is complete without it my copy sit between Fist of fury and Out for justice. Five stars...

The nunchaku shot was restored for the 2002 DVD release though the swearing remained cut.

By this time the prohibition on the sight of nunchuka had been deleted and the film would usually have been allowed to be uncut at a higher rating. However the BBFC had a shot lived policy in place at the time to not allow different versions to be released with different ratings. (The argument being that younger viewers may have decided to watch on the basis of marketing for a PG and may be shocked by the inclusion of unexpected material at a higher rating). So for this reason a category cut became compulsory..

UK: Passed PG uncut for mild bad language, rude humour, violence for:

The BBFC commented:

Rude humour includes a dog breaking wind underwater, and a recurring joke about a dog's discomfort at having its private parts inspected by competition judges.

The BBFC further commented in its annual report covering 2018:

A police Rottweiler goes undercover at a dog show. As part of the operation he is required to let the judges inspect his genitals in a manner that is not uncommon in dog shows. The character is reluctant but is encouraged to go to his happy place to get through the experience.

Thirty-one people wrote in to us echoing claims made in blogs that the scene might lower children's resistance to predators who wish to inappropriately touch them.

However, the scene is comic, innocent and non-sexual in nature and occurs within the fantastical context of a film about anthropomorphised canines.

In a similar vein to Peter Rabbit the complaints regarding Show Dogs predominantly stopped once the film had been released in cinemas.

Ireland: Passed PG uncut for Mild violence, language and rude humour.

IFCO received 8 viewer complaints about its PG rating (a third of the total for 2018).

The complaints related to a scene cut from the film in the US but retained in the version in Irish cinemas. A talking rottweiler called Max is advised to go to his happy place while having his genitals examined.

Assistant film classifier David Power responded that IFCO's classifiers didn't ascribe any hidden meaning or subtext to the scenes.

The film was cut for US theatrical release after complaints about a scene where the undercover dog has to get used to his privates being prodded by show judges

Australian morality campaigners described the cuts. See article from melindatankardreist.com :

The film tells the story of a police dog going undercover at a dog show. There are reportedly several scenes in which the dog, Max, has to have his genitals inspected. When he is uncomfortable and wants to stop he is told to go to a zen place. When he submits and allows his genitals to be touched, he is rewarded by advancing to the next level of the show.

In response to the global backlash, the production company withdrew the film, promising to re-cut it to remove the scenes in question. The film has been re-released, however the scenes remain, with only the encouragement to go to a zen place (essentially, to dissociate) being removed. The meaning remains intact, that unwanted sexual touching is to be endured and may be rewarded.

Summary Review : A Cult Classic
Showgirls is an excellent cult film. Its filled with terrible dialogue delivered by actors in performances that they'd surely rather forget. Paul Verhoeven - usually a top notch director - fails spectacularly with his fourteenth film and the script by Joe Eszterhas is laughable.

It stars Elizabeth Berkley as Nomi Malone (She's alone in the world, get the joke?), an ambitious young woman who has dreams of becoming a famous dancer in Las Vegas. Berkley's performance is something else. She smiles, she pouts, she shouts, she screams, she gyrates, she vomits, and often all of the above in the same scene.

But you will never be more entertained in your life. It is hilarious, outrageous, ridiculous, completely unrealistic, shallow, stupid and ultimately a misunderstood masterpiece of everyone involved in the production doing everything wrong in perfect synchronicity.

A great piece of trash.

Cuts justified by the BBFC as follows:

More problematic was Showgirls, an expose of the seamy side of Las Vegas, with a prurient emphasis on exploitative nudity, which was not only the subject of the film but its main selling point. In such a context, the sadistic gang rape of the only wholly sympathetic character in the film seemed unnecessarily extended and sensationalised. The rape was trimmed for cinema, and trimmed further for video, since the price of the rape could be adequately conveyed by the sight of the battered and bleeding victim.

See pictorial cuts details from movie-censorship.com. The cuts are all in the scene where Carver and friends rape Molly as mentioned above:

The BBFC suggested the cut for the 2004 cinema release and 2004 Universal DVD/Blu-ray:
During post-production, the distributor sought and was given advice on how to secure a U classification. As a result of this advice, sight of a headbutt by Princess Fiona was removed prior to submission. The submitted work was passed U without cuts.
From the BBFC Annual Report 2004:
On BBFC advice the distributors removed a vigorous headbutt delivered by Princess Fiona to the smarmy Prince Charming as a reward for a plot to make her fall for him and desert Shrek. This was no mild bump, but a fighting technique in full close-up, arguably made worse by the fact that the recipient is the focus of all eyes as Prince Charming and the audience are expecting a romantic kiss.

It has also been reported that the UK customised soundtrack featuring UK actors also dropped a reference to the crusades over religious sensitivity. A line of dialogue from John Cleese's King about his old crusade wound playing up was replaced with a reference to an old hunting wound

Review from UK Amazon : Not especially scary

If I deeply analysed this film I could probably highlight more flaws than good points but at its heart Shrooms is enjoyable, deserves credit for endeavouring to put a new(ish) slant on a well trodden genre, locations and acting are good and it has a very good ending.

This is one of those films that may well be viewed more favourably the second time around as I did spend some of the film wondering whether or not I liked it which is never a good thing; but it gets better as it goes on, intensifies in the second half of the film and for me ended on a strong note.

The violent scenes are almost solely viewed via the hazy drug induced hallucinations of one of the cast, not always effectively it must be added and in a lot of ways it is difficult to see why this was rated as an 18 cert. Presumably this was on the basis of the drug taking premise of the film. Not an awful amount of gore is seen, it is quite understated maybe a tad too much; there are some incidences of misplaced humour inserted as well and it has to be said Shrooms is not especially scary.
