The BBFC suggested cuts for PG This film was originally shown to the BBFC in an unfinished version. The BBFC advised the company that the film was likely to receive a 12A classification but that the requested
PG certificate could be achieved by making changes to four scenes, including dialogue. In particular the BBFC suggested that the company:
- remove a phallically placed dart on a newspaper picture;
- reduce the enthusiasm with which an electric chair and death is presented;
- remove any imitable
detail of household products being mixed to create a weapon; and
- remove an aggressive use of bitch .
When the finished version of the film was submitted these changes had been made and the film was classified PG . Thanks to Gavin who points out that the same cuts also apply to region 1 DVD releases
so presumably applies worldwide. |

StageFright: Aquarius is a 1987 Italy horror by Michele Soavi (as Michael Soavi). With David Brandon, Barbara Cupisti and Domenico Fiore.
A pre-cut version was passed 18 for 1987 UK VHS. All releases since have been uncut.
Summary Notes A troupe of struggling stage actors is rehearsing for a small-town production of a play. Everything seems to be as it should until one of the cast members turns up dead. In a panic, the others try
to get out, only to find they are now locked in the theater with the killer! Which one of them committed the murder, and who will get out alive? Firstly, this film is bloody but not all that gory, it's certainly not as over the
top as some of the slasher movies out at around the same time, instead this movie tries to offer an intense and suspensful atmosphere delivered with plenty of style.

From version details on IMDb. Additional scenes in the Director's Cut:
- An additional scene added straight in at the beginning immediately after the opening titles (originally it faded to the dig at giza) shows the entirety of the scene where Ra takes over the body of the caveboy showing the cavemen running from the
light in the sky and showing him walking towards it. From this point it fades to the original opening scene at the Giza dig.
- Moments after the stargate has been hoisted up by the workmen at the Giza dig, people notice that there is something
underneath it: a group of the Hora guards encased in the stone. The director's commentary on the DVD states that these are other guards that have come through the gate after it was sealed and were re-integrated straight into the stone.
- In the
scene after the stargate has been opened for the first time and the military are checking the pictures of the marking of the gate on the other gate, after James Spader says he is 'positive' he can decipher the symbols, Kurt Russel's character turns and
says "it's your call" in the theatrical version. In the special edition the line has been re-dubbed by him saying instead now "he's full of shit" - presumably this was done for rating purposes of the theatrical release.
- An
additional scene before Kurt Russell is gearing up with the group about to go through the stargate, shows him going to a secured area to look at the stone/fossil Hora's.
- When the army group are setting up the camp in the desert there is a longer
scene where the group discuss more about how the stargate works and how they are going to get back to Earth. The scene during the sandstorm inside the pyramid is also extended with more footage of them talking about the sandstorm and how they are going
to get back to earth.
- When the sandstorm initially hits at the nagada village and Kurt Russell, James Spader and the others are locked inside the city, they decide that they do not want to stay and decide to leave; when the natives try to stop
them Kurt Russell shoots at the ground to frightem them off. The boy (whom he later befriends) takes him up above to see the sandstorm approach. After this, a native that they were holding at gunpoint is released and Jackson comments "Sandstorm,
that would have been a brilliant reason to shoot everyone".
- The scene when James Spader awakes in the sarcophagus after being killed is extended, showing him walking towards Ra's chamber, seeing a cat sitting on Ra's throne.
- When
James Spader turns and shoots at Ra instead of his comrades so that they can flee, there are several extended cuts put in. Originally they were just ushered away by the natives, in the special edition they ride away on one of the Mastadges. Kurt Russell
and James Spader are then seen lost in a sandstorm and found by the boys, and taken to the caves (which is in the theatrical edition); an additional scene after this sees the boys feeding the Mastadges outside the caves.

US Amazon Review from
US Amazon : Killer Video Game I seem to be in the minority,
but I thought this movie was awesome. Maybe it's because I play a lot of computer games and I thought the premise of a killer video game was really clever (maybe not unique, but well done.) The plot revolves around a
mysterious video game being tested by a couple of game testers. No one seems to know its origin, but it soon becomes apparent that when you play the game and your character dies, you soon meet the same fate in real life. The game is based on the real-life serial killer Elizabeth Bathory, a 16th century Hungarian countess who killed and tortured hundreds of girls. The movie takes some liberty with the facts, such as having The Countess, as she's called, move to America, where she finds the requisite spooky old manor to inhabit.
I found the blending of game and reality very well-done and intriguing. I won't spoil the ending, but the heroes eventually find the body of the actual Countess, and guess what- she's not dead! (surprise) There is a
pretty cool final scene where they battle this vicious vixen, who I thought was one of the coolest movie monsters I've seen in a while. |

The Stendhal Syndrome is a 1996 Italy horror mystery thriller by Dario Argento. Starring Asia Argento, Thomas Kretschmann and Marco Leonardi.
Cut by the BBFC for 18 rated 1996 VHS and 1999 DVD. Uncut and 18 rated
since 2004 DVD. There is narrative scene missing from the English version as compared with the Italian version. Summary Review Anna Manni is a policewoman trying to capture a vicious serial rapist
and killer. The problem is that she suffers from "Stendhal's syndrome", a psychosomatic disease that gives her dizziness and hallucinations when she is exposed to the sight of paintings and artistic masterpieces. When the maniac lures her into
a trap inside Florence's famous Uffizi museum, her troubles are just beginning... This movie is definitely one of Argento's best. As usual the movie features Argento's masterful camerawork and artistic set design.
The movie also features enough scares to satisfy any horror fan. Where this movie truly shines, however, is in it's psychological aspects. It is unbearable at times to watch the tortures which Argento puts his daughter Asia through.

The Marquee DVD released in May 1999 contains all the material which had been pre-cut from the UK video version. Since the uncut version wasn't submitted to the BBFC, this version was withdrawn and re-released in a cut form. The new cut
release has a colour graphic on the disc itself, whereas the uncut version had a black and white label. There were 11 pre-cut s totalling 2m:47s:
- In the rape of Anna (Asia Argento) by Alfredo (Thomas Kretschmann) 12s are removed that show Alfredo rolling a razor blade around in his mouth and then removing it. A couple of response shots from Anna are also effected.
- 14s have been removed from the subsequent rape of another woman whilst Anna is still watching. A shot of Alfredo holding a gun next to the victims face. The infamous slow motion close up of a bullet being fired through the victims
mouth and face has been removed along with the view though the newly made hole. This cut is rather ineptly done as Anna screams and then gets covered in blood without any obvious reason.
- An entire scene lasting 100s has
been eliminated showing Anna returning home to a rather cold and unfriendly reception from her family. Scene setting only.
- Alfredo moves on to another rape of a woman in a dress shop.10s of Alfredo hitting the woman in the
face have been cut along with another 6s of a slow motion bullet going off by the woman's head. The bullet reflects an image of Alfredo as it passes him by.
- Anna gets raped again in Alfredo's hideout but we miss 11s of the
action, Some screaming by Anna, s hot of Alfredo from Anna's point of view and Anna being hit in the face.
- In this version, Anna suffers 10s less of a razor blade being drawn down her cheek and she loses a view of Alfredo.
- Eventually Anna gets the upper hand and she gets to give Alfredo a beating with her gun. She hits him 6 times in the original but only 4 times in this version.

The BBFC commented:

The BBFC explained the 15 rating further: The Stepfather is a psychological horror/thriller about a serial killer who finds his victims by marrying young divorced or widowed women with children. It has been passed 15
for strong psychological threat and menace and violence. The main protagonist in the film commits a number of murders in order to protect his anonymity and, while these murders do not contain strong detail, they are
all strong in terms of the brutal and callous nature of the killings. There is also an unrelenting sense of threat and menace as the killer's new family start to suspect him and, consequently, place themselves in danger. The Guidelines at 12A only allow
for moderate physical and psychological threat and these scenes are stronger and more disturbing and, consequently, most appropriately placed at 15 . Stronger and bloodier violence occurs at the film's climax and contain some focus upon
injuries and blood which also secure the 15 classification. The US release |

Straight On Till Morning is a 1972 UK horror by Peter Collinson. With Rita Tushingham, Shane Briant and James Bolam.
Cut by the BBFC for X rated cinema release in 1972. It is unknown if these
cuts persist to 18 rated home video. MPAA R rated in the US. Summary Review: Incredibly bleak A timid, withdrawn woman meets a man she believes is finally the love of her life, unaware that he is a
vicious serial killer. Incredibly bleak psychological thriller from Hammer really captures the darkest side of the sexual revolution. Tushingham is excruciatingly naive as the beleaguered mouse-child,
Briant impossibly fey as the brooding beast-man, and the whole drama is absurdly lighthearted and gruesome at once. By far the best thing Hammer ever churned out.

Strange Days is a 1995 USA crime Sci-Fi mystery by Kathryn Bigelow. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett and Juliette Lewis.
Cut by the BBFC for an 18 rated 1995 cinema release and further cut for all UK home video releases to date (2017). Uncut and MPAA R rated in the US. Uncut and FSK 16 rated in Germany. Summary Notes
Set in the year 1999 during the last days of the old millennium, the movie tells the story of Lenny Nero, an ex-cop who now deals with data-discs containing recorded memories and emotions. One day he receives a disc which contains the
memories of a murderer killing a prostitute. Lenny investigates and is pulled deeper and deeper in a whirl of blackmail, murder and rape. Will he survive and solve the case? This is a movie people either love
or hate. This is a gutsy film that takes a lot of chances in terms of plot, performance and presentation. If nothing else, you will love Angela Bassett. She's amazing not for the kung fu moves -- her character is the voice of reason, and her performance
is stunningly genuine. At its most basic level, "Strange Days" is a thriller -- futuristic film noir, with all of the traditional characters. But don't let the title or the plot summaries
fool you -- this is a film that is less about new technology, science fiction and the future, and much more about the volatility of race and police relations in the USA. This is a character-driven movie, not an effects-driven one.

images of forcible breast exposure in a medium which could permit the repeated viewing of such scenes out of context. The scene was designed to convey the dangerous pleasures purveyed by 'snuff movies', but it seemed to the Board to have come perilously
close to providing those same pleasures itself. (What a load of bollocks! its my favourite film of the year!) All the BBFC cuts apply to the rape and murder of Iris in the hotel room:
- 3 seconds of the stun-gun being applied to Iris's crotch (totally cut, we jump immediately from Nero sitting in the car to a shot of Mace looking in the rear-view mirror)
- 5 seconds of the 'forcible breast exposing' have been cut
- 2
seconds of the killer cutting open Iris's trousers are gone (just before he opens his trousers)
- The rape itself loses 2 seconds in one of the short sequences (we miss at least 1 thrust)

Straw Dogs is a 1971 USA / UK thriller by Sam Peckinpah. Starring Dustin Hoffman, Susan George and Peter Vaughan.
Censorship History The BBFC advised cuts on seeing early rough cuts of the film. The advise was adopted for the 1972 cinema release which became the definitive version of the film. The film was cut in the US for an R rated
theatrical release. The cuts were to the 2 rape scenes, and famously seemed to convert Susan George being taken from behind into a scene of anal rape. The definitive version was released several times on pre-cert VHS between 1980 and 1985. The BBFC
procrastinated for several years over a post VRA video release, effectively banning the video. The BBFC particularly objected to the first rape scene where the Susan George character ended up enjoying the sex. The cut US R rated version was eventually
formally banned twice in 1995. The cut US R rated version was passed 18 uncut by the BBFC for a 1995 cinema release. The film was unbanned on video in 2002 when the definitive version was passed 18 uncut for DVD. Summary Notes
Upon moving to Britain to get away from American violence, astrophysicist David Sumner and his wife Amy are bullied and taken advantage of by the locals hired to do construction. When David finally takes a stand it
escalates quickly into a bloody battle as the locals assault his house. Essentially, what we have is a movie that uproots some of the values, morality and themes governing the mythic cinematic western and transplants them
into an English backwater community. The locals are restless, being envious of and despising the American strangers (Dustin Hoffman and wife Susan George) who intrude on their redneck world. The fact that Hoffman's wife used to be one of their own serves
to make matters worse, increasing both tension and conflict.
Hoffman wants to avoid trouble and remain peaceable, but ultimately is pushed too far when his cat is killed, wife is raped and his homestead is laid siege to by his tormentors. He
stubbornly offers shelter to Niles, the village idiot, who has just inadvertently killed a young girl. His refusal to surrender the man to the (lynch) mob initiates the violent finale. The stage is set for a man doing what a man's gotta do, and this
translates as holding the fort whilst killing and maiming as many of the attacking natives as possible.

There are reports that some dialogue may be missing through print damage UK: Passed X (18) after unofficial BBFC suggested cuts were implemented prior to submission for:
BBFC secretary Stephen Murphy saw the film unofficially at rough cut stage and recommended cuts. The cuts were to:
- reduce the 2nd party of the rape scene when Norman rapes Amy particularly where Norman takes Amy from behind
- reduce the death of Charlie in a bear trap.
Even before US censors further compounded the problem, commentators suggested that Murphy's cuts transformed rear entry vaginal sex into forced sodomy. The cut version became the final version and was not cut further by the BBFC. It
is suspected that longer footage of the second rape scene exists only on the cutting-room floor. US: The pre-cut cinema version is MPAA Unrated for:
This version has now become the definitive version of the film The BBFC issued the following statement when the video was unbanned in 2002: When Straw Dogs was previously
considered by the BBFC for video release in 1999, it was refused a classification certificate. This was because its distributor at the time declined to make the cuts requested by the Board to the film's rape scene. The version on which the Board then
based its judgement was a pre-cut American print of the film.
In the central scene, Amy, played by Susan George, is raped by her former boyfriend and then by another man. The pre-cut American
version deleted most of the second rape in which Amy is clearly demonstrated not to enjoy the act of violation. The cuts made for American distribution, which were made to reduce the duration of the sequence, therefore tended paradoxically to compound
the difficulty with the first rape, leaving the audience with the impression that Amy enjoyed the experience. The Board took the view in 1999 that the pre-cut version eroticised the rape and therefore conflicted with the concerns expressed in the Video
Recordings Act about promoting harmful activity.
The version considered in 2002 is substantially the original uncut version of the film, restoring much of the unambiguously unpleasant second
rape. The ambiguity of the first rape is given context by the second rape, which now makes it quite clear that sexual assault is not something that Amy ultimately welcomes.
For the current
submission, the Board showed the video to leading clinical psychologists specialising in work with sex offenders and to a panel of members of the public. The response of the clinical psychologists was that the present version of Straw Dogs was not
harmful and was not likely to encourage an interest in rape or abusive behaviour towards women. The psychologists agreed that the ambiguous first rape was in fact a fairly realistic depiction of a quite complex situation. They also agreed that, by the
end of the second rape, any general messages reinforcing 'rape myths' were undermined by the lack of ambivalence shown in Amy's reaction to the second attack. It was also noted that Amy's flashbacks later in the film further undermined any impression
that she might welcome rape or that it has no serious effect on its victims. The psychologists commented that the scene was filmed in a relatively discreet manner, with limited potential today for titillation.
The issue of context was also important to the members of the public to whom the video was shown as part of a research exercise into the acceptability of images of sexual violence. A focus group of 26 people viewed Straw Dogs , with 20 people accepting '18' uncut as the most appropriate category, 5 suggesting only minor cuts, and only one favouring rejection. No respondent asked for major cuts of the kind required by the Board in 1999.
Significantly, respondents saw the manner in which Amy copes with her experience as essentially positive and concluded that the present version of the scene - as well as the flashbacks shown
afterwards - reinforced the idea that rape is not to be taken lightly because of the serious effect it can have on individuals. No concerns about possible harmful effects were identified.
The
Board recognises that the rape scene in Straw Dogs has lost only part of its power over the years, despite the age of the film. Nonetheless, in this restored version, and in the light of the evidence of expert opinion, our own conclusion now is
that the film has no significant potential to cause harm to viewers or, through their actions, to society as a whole. We have also taken account of the evidence of the public acceptability of the work.
The Board maintains a strict position on depictions of sexual violence that endorse or eroticise harmful behaviour, and will continue to do so. The Board does not believe that the present version of Straw Dogs is in breach of that
policy.
The film had previously been passed 'X' uncut for cinema release in 1971 and '18' in the pre-cut version for cinema reissue in 1995. |

Street Law is a 1974 Italy action thriller by Enzo G Castellari. Starring Franco Nero, Giancarlo Prete and Barbara Bach.
There is a significantly shortened US Version titled Street Law. The full
length Italian version was released on UK pre-cert VHS and more recently on MPAA Unrated DVD and Blu-ray. Promotional Material The legendary Franco Nero (Django, The Mercenary, The Salamander,
Enter the Ninja) stars as Carlo Antonelli, an average citizen until the day he is brutally beaten during a violent robbery. When the police drop the case and the suspects remain free, Carlo is pushed beyond his breaking point. Now one man will launch an
all-out war against the criminal scum who plague our cities, where justice has its own rules, vengeance needs no badge and the only thing that matters is Street Law. Barbara Bach (The Spy Who Loved Me, The Unseen, The Great Alligator, Screamers) and
Giancarlo Prete (Warriors of the Wasteland, Escape from the Bronx) co-stars in this vicious Death Wish-inspired crime thriller (also known in Europe as Vigilante II) directed by Italian action maestro Enzo Castellari (The Heroin Busters, The Big Racket,

Street Trash is a 1987 US comedy horror by Jim Muro Jr. With Mike Lackey, Bill Chepil and Vic Noto.
Cut by the BBFC for 18 rated 1987 VHS. Uncut on home video since 2001 DVD.
Uncut and MPAA Unrated in the US. Summary Review: Lots of Fun When a liquor store owner finds a case of Viper in his cellar, he decides to sell it to the local hobos at one dollar a bottle,
unaware of its true properties. The drinks causes its consumers to melt, very messily. Two homeless lads find themselves up against the effects of the toxic brew, as well as going head to head with Bronson a Vietnam vet with sociopathic
tendencies, and the owner of the junkyard they live in. The ultra-low-budget exploitation flick Street Trash certainly lives up to its name in more ways than one. Not only is it rather trashy when it comes to generally poor
or histrionic acting, bawdy humor, gore, and several lingering flashes of T&A, but it is also one of the few films set in New York City's skid row that was actually filmed almost entirely in authentic skid-row venues. For
those who enjoy exploitation horror flicks from the 1970s and 1980s, Street Trash is definitely one of the best.

Amazon The third instalment in the Street Fighter trilogy has the best plot yet. A gang of
mobsters wants a formula for synthetic heroin. The gang double crosses Terry (big mistake), murders his girlfriend (bigger mistake) and fails to kill him (biggest mistake). So as expected Terry goes after them and gets his revenge. The gang realizes too
late it is bad for one's health to ... off Terry Tsurugi. I liked the action even though I had a pretty good idea what was going to happen after they killed his girlfriend. The action was cool and brutal. I recommend this as well as the first two, Street

Summary Review Jason Blade is a man who can't bring himself to commit fully to his woman, and who spends all his time with a
special crime task force taking on assignments to fight crime and right wrong do-ers. When his love is kidnapped by his arch-enemy the race is on to get into the power station where she is being held and battle an army of ninjas. Only then can he face
Baxter, his arch-enemy, and stop a bomb from exploding to save his sweetheart, and show her that he is a man. A man who can commit. A man who is strong. Another gem of a film which I came across staying up yet another night.
The final sequence in an abandoned electricity plant is thrilling, with great fight sequences. Along with an old woman psychiatrist, who thinks she's a commando, and a veteran martial arts instructor, Strike of the Panther is great.

Striking Back is a 1985 US horror thriller by Sean S Cunningham. With Shannon Presby, Lori Loughlin and James Spader.
Cut by the BBFC for an 18 rated VHS release in 1988. Later uncut and 15

town is terrorized by a local street gang. This very interesting but sadly underrated gem directed by Sean S. Cunningham ( Friday the 13th ) offers an original variation of both the revenge thriller and vigilante action
movie, since it has ordinary common high school teenagers in the lead roles. Basically this means the film begins with harsh but fairly harmless bullying but yet ends with extreme violence and relentless murder. The New Kids
is a competently made and occasionally very suspenseful thriller with tons of action, likable performances and an irresistibly charming 80's atmosphere.

Cut by the BBFC for X rated 1979 cinema release. Later uncut and 18 rated

murders take place. Each of the victims are connected to the same studio that Evelyn worked at and each are viciously murdered by the knife wielding killer. Strip Nude for Your Killer is a sleazy and violent Italian
giallo that will surely please fans of Italian cinema. There is lots of nudity provided by Edwige Fenech, Femi Benussi and Erna Schurer. The jazz score by Berto Pisano is pretty good and the plot is actually very gripping.
