British newspapers whipped up a moral panic and the film was banned in Westminster. No problems for the BBFC though and it was passed 18 uncut for cinema and home video. In the US the NC-17 version is uncut whilst the R rated version is significantly cut.

Summary Notes

Since a road accident left him with serious facial and bodily scarring, a former TV scientist has become obsessed by the marriage of motor-car technology with what he sees as the raw sexuality of car-crash victims. The scientist, along with a crash victim he has recently befriended, sets about performing a series of sexual acts in a variety of motor vehicles, either with other crash victims or with prostitutes whom they contort into the shape of trapped corpses. Ultimately, the scientist craves a suicidal union of blood, semen, and engine coolant, a union with which he becomes dangerously obsessed.

Kara-Ungar's portrayal of Catherine exemplifies perfectly the icy detachment of a woman who appears to be observing herself from another galaxy. Crash is, above all, a brave attempt to explore an almost un-bearable subject - the death of affect and our unconscious desire for violence.

MFB notes the cinema footage as 8576 feet, which would be 95:17s at 24 frames per second. That's more or less the running time when the film was passed for video on 19 March 1986, 91:17 with PAL speed-up. The version on Indicator's Blu-ray runs 95:28 at 24 fps. So I suspect the home viewing version is identical to the cinema release, with maybe differences in distributor idents etc. I think is likely was that the film completed editing between BBFC cinema certification and release, shortening the film by some four minutes. Having now watched it, I'm sure it could have done with tightening.

Summary Review: Psycho Genre

This is one of the last examples of Hammer's psycho genre, similar in style and plotline to those the company made in the early sixties such as Maniac, Paranoiac, Nightmare and Scream of Fear/Taste of Fear.

It probably isn't one of Hammer's greatest achievements but is by no means one of the worst. The photography is very effective in places and the setting is quite haunting in a picturesque kind of way.

Summary Review: A lurid masterpiece

Ken Russell's masterpiece has cult movie written all over it. A lurid, extreme sex-and-violence fantasy porno-movie.

In the bravest and best performance of her career, Kathleen Turner plays the mystery woman who is Joanna, prim fashion designer by day and China Blue, the fantasy hooker to end all fantasy hookers, by night.

Her nemesis is Anthony Perkin's psychopathic preacher with the razor-sharp dildo. His is the kind of performance that goes beyond mere acting into some kind of crazy stratosphere all it's own.

Barry Sandler's script is brilliant.

• The hurricane at the beginning is longer.
• The scene where the crocodile attacks a herd of water buffalo occurs much later than in the Thai version.
• Randall created a new opening credits scene where the crocodile is seen devouring a pair of naked women.
• Sequences from other Chaiyo films are inserted into the film, including a scene where three children are eaten alive by the crocodile.
• The crocodile's lengthy attack on a riverside village takes place in two separate scenes in Randall's version.
• The ending was altered: In the Thai version, Tony destroys the crocodile after throwing a dynamite fuse into its jaws. The international version has Peter's self-sacrifice causing the explosion.

She slips into a life of debauchery, torture, whipping, slavery and salaciousness. Meanwhile, her brazen, flirtatious and liberated sister Juliette ironically receives nothing but happiness and reward for her wanton behaviour.

Koo Stark is good as Justine, innocent, naive, and of course, beautiful. The film has great period detail is beautifully shot.

In the original version, the footage was darkish but still distinct and in colour. In the new version it's bright, scratchy and in black & white! It doesn't even look like the same footage, and is clearly discernibly during normal playback which was not the case in the original version. Is it still genuine hardcore footage? It appears Channel 5's uncut screening was of even more value than I first thought. Censorship Reversed? Now Cruising has been released on DVD for the first time. First off, the movie has been re-mastered and looks like a different film. What was murky or muffled before, now is crystal clear, especially the soundtrack. Presumably this is the undoing of the censorship required for a US R Rating. William Friedkin spoke of MPAA censorship and cuts to obtain an R for Cruising. These were fairly rapid film inserts, but you couldn't fail to notice them.

During the stabbing, 4 shots were removed, 2 of these shots were subliminal images showing hardcore anal penetration. ~29minutes into the film, a camera pan across one of the gay bars has lost 6 seconds (Just before the guy asks Pacino about the hankie). There still exists one other subliminal shot during the peepshow murder, the image is so dark it looks like nothing. It's cut into the shot of the knife going into the victim's back.
